Psychology 101: you aren’t at the mercy of your emotions: your brain creates them

You aren’t at the mercy of your emotions: your brain creates them **By Dr. Lisa Feldman Barrett My research lab sits about a mile from where several bombs exploded during the Boston Marathon in 2013. The surviving bomber, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev of Chechnya, was tried, convicted and sentenced to death. Now, when a jury has to make the decision between life in prison and the death penalty, they base their decision largely on whether or not the defendant feels remorseful for his actions. Tsarnaev spoke words of apology, but when jurors looked at his face, all they saw was a stone-faced stare.  Now, Tsarnaev is guilty, there's no doubt about that. He murdered and maimed innocent people, and I'm not here to debate that. My heart goes out to all the people who suffered. But as a scientist, I have to tell you that jurors do not and cannot detect remorse or any other emotion in anybody ever. Neither can I, and neither can you, and that's because emotions are not what we think they are.

Psychology 101: The positive effects of meditation on the human brain (scientifically proven…)

The positive effects of meditation on the brain (scientifically proven...) **Reviewed and approved by psychologist Gema Sanchez Cuevas Written by Edith Sanchez (Hector Williams Zorrilla: The positive effect on the brain that comes from the consistent practice of mindfulness is scientifically known. Mindfulness meditation is studied and researched at the world's most prestigious universities, including Harvard University in The US. Mindfulness meditation or full attention is the best way to care, protect, stimulate and educate your brain positively). —————————————————————     Until just a few decades ago, meditation was seen as a practice for strange people, which had more to do with religion than well-being. Thanks to a greater dissemination of information and the open-mindedness of many sectors of the West, today we know that meditating is not necessarily a mystical activity, but rather a practice of encounter and harmonization in our body and mind.     The effects of meditation

Psychology 101: The human brain does not work effectively in the midst of disorder, disorganization and chaotic situations…

Psychology 101: The human brain does NOT function effectively in the midst of disorder, disorganization and chaotic situations - your brain prefers a life with order, precision, accurate prediction, and purpose with goals to live it - **By Hector Williams Zorrilla Dr. Viktor Emil Frankl (pictured on the cover of this short essay), survived the Nazi Holocaust. His elderly mother, his brother and almost all of his close relatives died in the gas chambers, or by forced labor and starvation. Dr. Frankl saw many thousands of people of all ages die before his eyes, while he waited for his turn to be put into the gas chambers. Dr. Frankl survived the Nazi Holocaust, and was released when that dark nightmare in the pages of humanity ended. Dr. Frankl became a world hero. In the midst of that horrible and indescribable situation, Dr. Frankl learned several things about how the human brain works in the midst of the imminent danger of physical death. Dr. Frankl's first learning: The human b

Psychology 101: Mojandas Karamchand Gandhi: the capabilities of the human brain have NO borders or barriers of geography, ethnicity, social status, or any kind - with the almost unlimited power of your brain you can do anything that benefits humanity - **By Hector Williams Zorrilla If you have not seen the movie "Gandhi", I recommend that you watch it now at the beginning of a new year. The inspiration that the film will awaken in you, will serve as intrinsic motivation for the rest of the year and it will be the best investment of three hours of your life. The British Empire did not expect that a small, frail and visually weak body like Dr. Gandhi would inhabit a brain as powerful, precise, sharp, and emotionally and intellectually wise and focused. They judged the book by the cover or title page and they were wrong, because Dr. Gandhi knew how to effectively use the almost unlimited powers of his brain. Dr. Gandhi is proof that the human brain represents and expresses huma

Nelson Mandela: The human brain is magical, wonderful and very powerful - it allows us to transform any personal and social environmental "reality" - **By Hector Williams Zorrilla The life of every living being is embodied in his brain. The life of each human being is outlined, is oriented and is guided by his brain. The history of each human being is contained, written and expressed by his brain. Therefore, the history of humanity is embodied and expressed through the brains of each human being who is part of humanity. The history, progress and development of each human civilization is the history of the brain development of the humans that make up each stage of human civilization. No human civilization, therefore, no human culture, goes ahead and goes beyond the brain development of the humans who create it. Except, some visionary humans who are ahead of their zeitgeist (of their epoch and times). Many human societies have fallen short in the emphasis they place on their m

Psychology 101: “Gratitude is wealth, complaint is poverty…” (Doris Day)

"Gratitude is wealth, complaint is poverty..." (Doris Day) **By Hector Williams Zorrilla The negative bias of the human brain is structured to perceive the negative side of the "reality" that every human being lives daily. And that is so because of the biological law of human survival. In the beginning of humanity, neglecting the dangers that constantly lurked could cost your life. The human brain was structured based on security and protection to survive the imminent dangers that surrounded humans. Neurosciences call this structuring of the brain "the negative bias of the human brain." In other words, the natural tendency of the human brain is to always think of the worst, of the negative that lurks and threatens life, as a way of protecting life. In the beginning of humanity that attitude was positive. In most modern and civilized societies today the "negative bias of the human brain" is not necessary. Citizens in most of the truly civilized

(Doris Day)
